Oscars 2012 - Year of the sleeve

This year the red carpet was crammed full of cover ups. From capped to capes the world's most stylish senorita's brought back the sleeve.

Proving what I'd been presuming for a while; the arm is the new arse.

I can't escape the pleas from people requesting a bicep cover up. It comes from every fashion angle regardless of age, shape and size. I even had a girlfriend confess she constantly conceals them, which doesn't bode well for us mere mortals as she teaches yoga for a living!

However it has been hard to find fashion to fit the remit so I was chuffed to bits to see this year's Oscar clad lasses step out in some stylish sleeves.

My marvelous mother turned 64 today.

So to celebrate we ate in one of my favourite Edinburgh eateries, Chez Jules, only to discover they were serving free food this lunch time. It was two rounds of salmon finished with rhubarb crumble for me et mama.

Then it was off for a pockle round the newly refurbished portrait gallery to round off a pretty perfect day.

Fashion shoot in the bug room

Any time I decide to do a fashion shoot outside, the usually crisp and dry Edinburgh sky clouds over to destroy my dream.

So at the 11th hour on Wednesday I had to salvage the shoot from showers and ask the kind people of the Bank Hotel if we could take shelter there.

They kindly obliged and the style squad and I were shown to 'the spider room'.

The former bank premises have been turned into a bar and hotel still retaining all of its Royal Mile quirk and charm.

Our room was like an apothecary's paradise, with potion bottle stacked on potion bottle in an old wooden cabinet. Their content ranged from pickled pythons to giant beetles to keep you company during your stay.

Classic creepy auld reekie stuff!

Birthdays are always bitter sweet. Sure, they are fun but as the fine lines Etch A Sketch their way across your face no amount of cake can comfort you.

I'm starting to think that's why your friends come baring gifts. And they don't come much greater than this fine bone china butterfly pendant by Diane Von Furstenberg.

Found by one of my dearest girlfriends, we were stumped as to the date this piece was made. If you've any idea of when Diane dabbled in her ceramic days please leave me a wee note. I do love a little back story.

Belfast loves a bargain

Boxing day is a time for cold cuts and Internet shopping, but not in Belfast.

The shoppers were out en force yesterday taking full advantage of this antiquated consumer led Christmas tradition.

I watched tons of teens patiently queued outside a plethora of places as stores worked on a one in, one out basis.

The only reason I breached the front door was to take full advantage of the build in babysitters, also known as the grandparents, for a spot of lunch with the other half.

I wanted to scream at the swarm of shoppers 'go home and log on'. But bazaarly they appeared to be loving the mayhem and mess as clothes chaotically got chucked around the shops in Victoria Square.

This morning I made my way down to the radio studio's at The Tun to discuss hats with ears on BBC Scotland.

Sadly said head gear has seeped into our shops and onto Joe Public's nappers, with both adults and children committing crimes against their craniums by wearing them.

The trend, which looks a little like a halloween hangover, has been sported by stars such as Jessie J and Snoop Dogg.

A duo not really known for their prima fashionista status...

Anyway, here's a peek inside the studio at The Tun. It always makes me think of Andi Peters in the broom cupboard!

A little Harvey Nichols at the Portrait Gallery

Friday night called for a spot of frocking up to attend a very special fashion show.

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery opened its doors to a select few a week before its grand re-opening on December 1st.

The beautiful building has undergone an enormous amount of work which put the gallery out of action since 2009.

And to celebrate the return of the gallery they teamed up with Harvey Nichols to put on a show of epic proportions.

Held in the opulence of the Ramsey Room amongst portraits of tartan clad titans dresses fit for such an occasion sashayed down the runway.

My stand out piece was a Marlene Birger feather mini dress that I must have for Christmas day!

Fashion shoots are always fun, hard work, but definitely fun. And when I get the chance to do one in an iconic building it's even better.

Edinburgh Playhouse unlocked its gilded doors to the team and I today and I was like a kid in a candy shop.

I'm obsessed with old things, be them buildings or ball gowns, so being let loose in one of the capitals landmarks was always going to be distracting.

As my photographer shot our marvellous model I got snappy happy with the fixtures in the Overtures bar.

And this bronze statue of Freddie Mercury just happened to be one of them.

Lace Legging Lust

Last year lace leggings taunted me as my ever growing pregnant belly prevented me from partaking in the trend.

I looked longingly at the lassies wearing their's and liaised daily with my calendar, counting the seconds until I could slip into mine.

That day has arrived, almost a year since I bought them I am now lounging in ma leggings. And oh, how I adore them. I don't care if they can't keep the cold out!

I do enjoy me a bit radio participation so when BBC Scotland come knocking I always answer my calls. I dabbled as a disc jockey in a past life so it's like riding a comfy old bike when I get back on a mic.

The chosen topic was picked after a boutique began stocking kids party clothes starting from £175.00 up to £2000.00!

Here we all are gasping at the prospect of parting with that much cash to pop some clothes on your children's backs.

Saturday afternoons are rapidly becoming cake, cuppa&chatter day with Ms Carolyn Baxter.

We tend to frequent our favourite little bistro on Dalry Road (perfect walking distance from both our flats) and put the world to rights over posh nosh and pastries.

En route up the road I popped into her flat for a quick Pug squeeze (that's her dog, Malia) and one more herbal tea before heading home.

Three of my closest compadre's are swapping single life for their new roles as wife.

A quick trip up to Kudos in Morningside confirmed what my friend already knew. She had found the perfect frock.

eBay is enabling my shoe addiction

A few years back my beautiful friend and stylist supremo Ms Zoe Hill bought a perfect pair of blue suede booties from Office.

These little shoe/boots went with everything in our own personal wardrobes and were the go to shoe on many a fashion shoot.

While wasting time in the wee hours of the morning I stumbled across a purple pair that looked a lot like Zo's.

On closer inspection they were not exactly the same. The material was faux suede instead of the real deal but that didn't put me off, in fact it made it all the sweeter when I clicked to buy for £12.99!

Found this 1950s treasure last week while walking home from town after a lovely lunch with a girlfriend.

I'd been searching in vain for a vintage dresser to slip into the window of my bedroom, but was having no luck. Every time I entered a charity shop I was horrified to find overpriced homogenised pieces of furniture that I could buy cheaper direct from Argos/Asda/Ikea (you get the drift). So, when I spotted this I swooned and reached for the plastic. After all it was only £30 and I was donating to charity in the process.

Good deed and a stylish steal all wrapped up in the same deal. Bliss.

I had a wee tear in my eye last night when I heard STV had decided to end The Hour. I gave up the show back in April to get ready for the birth of baby Gabriel so had already said my goodbyes to the team, but hearing that it was no longer going to be on air after two years of broadcasting brought back the bye bye's.

I worked on the show for a year and had an absolute hoot shooting each week. I will always think back on it fondly as I was pregnant for half the time I was on air. The team were like a mini family and it was one of the most fabulous jobs I've ever done. So in honour of some tea time telly I'm taking everyone for a wee trip down memory lane.

This was one of my favourite fashion sections. Recreating looks from Boardwalk Empire while being six months up the duff. Good times.

The tale of the lost lipstick

Last week I treated myself to a little lip lust.

It came in the form of MeMeMe Cosmetics - colour: coral, coral cloak to be exact.

I'd been on the lookout for the perfect shade to compliment my peely wally complexion for months and finally I scouted it in Superdrug.

What made it all the more marvellous was this sumptuous stuff is the most moisturising lipstick I've ever slipped on. That, and it stays put.

So I decided to pop it on today to dress up a dreary outfit and headed for a cuppa.

While multi tasking bouncing the bambini, gossiping with a girlfriend and chugging back coco I felt the urge to slip a coat of coral cloak over chapped feeling lips, dropping it on the floor in the process. I told myself not to forget my new favourite cosmetic, doing just that as we left the bar.

I only realised hours later once said lips started drying out again after scoffing a tasty lunch of mussels&chips.

Devastated, I dialled the bars number (praise be the iPhone for finding it for me) and spoke to the bar manager who remembered us from the morning.

Popping me on hold he went off for a hunt. And there, under the chair he found my long lost lippy.

Sheer joy surged through my body. A tad dramatic you may feel, but I'd barely broke its seal!

Wednesday's fashion shoot was a hoot.

The heavens opened on us in true Edinburgh style but the team&I were one step ahead of the weather and managed to shoot outdoors without the rain ruining our photo call.

Our theme was 'new mod'. The look takes the iconic 60s trend and infuses a little 80s tailoring with 90s Brit pop anorak attitude.

Can't get enough of this deep pink nail polish from Topshop. You'd think I'd been bathing in it I've gone through so many bottles. It's the perfect tone to off set all those autumnal colours that are kicking around the wardrobe this time of year.

To make sure your manicure is super shiny without hitting the nail bar there is one rule. Buff. Removing the nail ridges makes the polish stay on longer and gives your nail's that extra glossy finish without having to top coat.

This mink fur muff with its very own little metal container to keep it safe in. I'm thinking it's circa 1940s.

alternative wedding fashion shoot for the Evening News - part one

I think the Evening News knew I needed a little romance in my life so they let me go wedding dress wild with an alternative wedding fashion shoot.

The style squad were on fine form along with my favoured photographer (the newly wedded Mrs Jayne Wright, congrats!). Even my model, Ms Jemma Ferry, was swept up in matrimonial madness sporting her brand new engagement ring.

We went for drama with the first frock by Caroline Castigliano and hat by the very talented Sally-Ann Provan.

There was a bit of a 60s vibe about the next look teaming a feather cape from Biba with a mini dress by Almost Famous - plus we had to beehive Jemma's hair.

Then there was this dreamy vintage number that we picked up in Edinburgh's famous Armstrong's. We also gave a wee nod to Black Swan with the feather head piece also from the vintage emporium.

Inspired by Yoko Ono and her famous wedding white suit, floppy hat combo we pulled this whole outfit from Zara. I'm still lusting after the head gear!

There was a little love for Highland Bride when we teamed a vintage tartan jacket that was part of a man's kilt suit (from Armstrong's in Edinburgh) over the top of this traditional dress from Butterflies in the Grassmarket, topped off with the sweetest little top hat.

And finally we went beach inspired for the last look with this beautiful bright orange chiffon frock from Ted Baker. Teamed it with tons of gold accessories to give it a little Indian vibe - and of course some bare feet for the beach.

Who says you can't wear colour on your big day!

3rd Years - Edinburgh College of Art Exhibtion

Had a wee peek around the third year exhibition in the grand hall at ECA over the weekend and LOVED what I saw.

Here are a couple of pieces (gutted I can't put all the pictures up, blogger doesn't have the room)...

The white suit jacket was part of a group of tailored jackets. I just loved Jacqueline McLardie's offering, the shape was right up my street - it took all my strength not to rip it from the bust and run home with it.

The green puffa coat was part of the performance costume exhibit, designed by Daisy Azis, I understand it's costume but I think it's perfect for a stroll down Princes Street.

If you can go see the work, do. These guys are truly talented.

Boardwalk Empire - style&substance, simply sublime

Have finished watching Boardwalk Empire online (sneaky I know, but I just couldn't wait for it to hit the U.K).

It is one of the most exciting shows I've seen in a long time - finally filling the void Sex and the City and The Sopranos left. The story line is just as compelling as the styling. After watching an episode you'll be trying to devise a plan to break into their costume department to pilfer!

With two fashion shows to style, co-ordinate&curate plus a book to launch it was a pretty full on weekend.

Here's a peek at my mods v rockers models, a dress I designed that Mr Wayne Hemingway himself voted the best out of a dress making competition (rather nice of him), a model in my fur who wore it better than me! And my lovely assistant Louise getting her groove on after a hard days fashion in The Soul Casino.

Had a lovely little pre publication launch for my book 'A Girl's Guide To Vintage' this week. The great and good of Edinburgh turned out in force to support me which was mind blowing.

Amongst my guests was Sally-Ann Provan, milliner extraordinaire. I featured her and her fabulous hats in the book and much to my surprise she turned up to the party holding a wee gift for me....

Potty for Polka

I am IN LOVE with this little dress, it makes you feel like a polka princess. Can you believe it's from Tesco?! Sent to me by the lovely press team last week, it made its t.v debut with me on The Hour last week. Designed by Liquorish, you will be seeing these little numbers everywhere over the summer but it's only available on Tesco's website right now. The material is truly beautiful, and the detail from the structured shoulders to it's nipped in waist gives it a real designer feel for a fraction of the price.

Style Tried&Tested:Draping

This week's challenge was draping. I'm a big fan of this trend because it's so flattering to the female form. Think loose, free flowing fabric. This tend is a bit of a constant on the runways and can be worn everywhere from the office to your day off. We saw Lanvin put a beautiful charcoal chiffon jumpsuit down their runway, Balenciaga draped leather to create cute little mini dresses and Burberry Prorsum paired nude chiffon skirts with structured belted jackets for their Spring/Summer show.

I went with Burberry's suggestion and created a look for work. This simple shift dress with draping detail down the front also has a beaded neckline so you don't have to think about accessories. Grab a scarf, pair of court shoes and go.

8/10 for 'would you wear it' - I love the nude colour but I'm a bit of a spiller.
9/10 for comfort. The dress feels like butter on! And I could walk for miles in those killer heels, they were really comfortable.

I carry a dirty little secret around with me. Well it's more a guilty pleasure really. I dared never share for fear of judgment - that was until I discovered I'm not the only gal of my generation carrying such guilt. I, Lynne McCrossan, love a man in a full face of make-up. I blame Jim Henson turning Bowie into the most beautiful Goblin King the Labyrinth could have hoped for - from the age of three I was convinced all bad boys wore smoky eyes.

Tim Curry confused me while working a full red pout in Rocky Horror... did I dig men or women? Or just men dressed as women?! I still can't walk past a basque without longing for him.

Then there's the Izzard - the man gets better looking with every year he ages - add gloss to that equation and it does funny things to a woman.

Style Tried&Tested: Denim on Denim

This week I was asked to pull off a little denim on denim. I have to say I was more than anxious about it since I have recurring double denim dreams of a time when I thought denim mini's team with denim jackets were hawt, oh the shame.

But in the name of red neck fashion I dug deep and did it, only to discover it wasn't as bad as I thought. There appears to be a lot of differing opinions on how to do this look; some say avoid belts, others state they are a must. Some stress to avoid cowboy boots, others suggest injecting a little cowboy is a plus. Some side with skinny jeans and baggy shirts and other swear the opposite. As I was a fan of neither I opted for this...

Two different shades of denim are the easiest way to achieve the look, I felt popping a belt on broke everything up which I personally liked. I went for a funky T underneath as I just couldn't bare the thought of buttoning up the shirt. If you are opting for a baggier jean turn them up at the bottom, along with rolling the sleeves of your shirt up too. I had to pair everything together with heels so high I was in danger of vertigo as it was the only way to counteract feeling a little butch.

Marks out of 10...
Happy to be seen out in it: 4/10 - I'm just not a jean gal.
Comfort: 6/10, the heels are what made the outfit for me, but being so high they were difficult to maneuver.

Style Tried&Tested: Stripes

This weeks Style Tried&Tested was all about the stripe. I'm a big fan of this look, be it nautical or pin. The trend is no big spring shocker as we see it strutting down runways year after year, proving how versatile it is.

I've never been one of the 'less is more' gang so I doubled up on the stripes giving it edgier impact and showing stripe on stripe action can work, then added a corker of a necklace to pull everything together. There is a stripe for everyone - from bohemian to boardroom. All you have to do is figure out what mood your in and go with it.

Headed over to Glasgow at the weekend for a vintage spring clean at Oran Mor. The great and good of Glasgow were out on force to support the Say NO To PLASTIC Spring Vintage, Charity&Craft Sale. I spent the day looking at beautiful things and gabbing with my best friend - no better way to spend a Sunday!

Style Tried&Tested: Tribal

This week my Style Tried&Tested challenge was to tackle tribal. You can do it in two different ways. Pick one bright block colour and accessories with tribal-esq chunky jewellery (golds, turquoise, wood), shoes and bag to add texture and depth to the look - think aztec patterns for an easy way to wear it. Or, you can let your dress do all the tribal talking for you - I opted for the later.

Halston Heritage have brought out this gorgeous 'knot shoulder dress' that can easily take you from day to night. The print is perfect for tribal and is so colourful you can't help but feel your mood elevate the moment you step into it.

I paired the dress with flat sandals to show how easy it is to wear during the day. A killer pair of wooden wedges will see you right for the night look. The blue beading on the brown sandals keeps the look on trend and acts like some extra jewellery so you don't have to go too mad with accessories. I picked up a couple of gold bangles to tie everything together.

Bedazzle classic black

I enjoy the lbd as much as the next lady, but when there's a bit of bedazzling stitched into ebony fabrics I'm evermore engrossed.

A toddle around town had me tallying up these tasty bites...

This DVF number looks like it's just come off the back of Ms Audrey Hepburn, spotted in one of the city's chicest boutiques - Jane Davidson.

Kookai now has this soft black knit in store up and down the country. The silver stitching almost looks like metal has been woven into the wool - beautiful. No need for accessories with this jumper, it's already done it for you - clever jumper!

And finally... since we saw a smidge of sun this week I thought it would be nice to treat our toes:

Style Tried&Tested: Posh Sportswear

This week my Style 'Tried&Tested' came in the form of posh sportswear. The mere mention of gym gear gets me in a flap as I've never been a fan or either - gyms or workout clothes. But in the name of fashion I vowed to give it a go to see if... A) The look was easy to pull off and B) If I would actually wear it out. So I hit the shops to find that happy medium between what the runways and fashion house are telling us to wear and what I feel comfortable putting myself in. This is what I found...

Urban Outfitters have this fabulous Van Halen sweat top (£35.00) that falls off the shoulder. I'm a big fan of shoulder exposure - it's by far my favourite body part to show off, much less obvious than your chest and a little less daunting than putting your pins on display.

The three quarter length jogging bottoms with draw string waist were incredibly comfy to wear. They can be found at H&M for a steal at £12.99. But the real clincher with this outfit for me is those red and orange suede high heels with built in platform from Carvela (£150.00) and that sweet little lip shaped purse with union jack detail on it by Lulu Guinness (£395.00). I picked up the purse in Jane Davidson here in Edinburgh.

Then there's this offering from Warehouse in all its faux snakeskin finery. This will look sensational over summery maxi dresses or flung over festival clobber, it's reduced from £50.00 to £40.00. Really reminds me of that iconic Ossie Clark snakeskin classic he modeled himself throughout the 70's - any excuse to post a picture of that beautiful man and his beautiful clothes....

Director Vadim Jean

I had the pleasure of hanging out with director Vadim Jean and his team last night in one of the city's most spectacular independent film houses - Cameo.
His new documentary 'In The Land Of The Free, narrated by Samuel L Jackson, tells the story of the Angola 3 - three men who have spent a combined total of a century in solitary confinement for crimes they insist they did not commit.

The guys will be in Glasgow tonight at Glasgow Film Theatre showing the documentary and doing a Q&A. At Southampton Harbour Lights on the 3rd and at the hmvcurzon Wimbledon on April 13th.
